Saltwater fishing around Tofino
The Tofino and Ucluelet areas are situated on the migration path of most major Salmon runs, along with a vast underwater shelf that provides ample baitfish and habitat for Halibut, ling cod, snapper, Dungeness crab and other fish.
The best Chinook (King Salmon) fishing is during the months of June, July and August. Chinook are the largest of all Salmon and start to show up in large numbers in the Ucluelet and Tofino areas in mid May. They stay on the banks feeding and growing rapidly and can reach weights of up to 50lbs! Prime time for the largest Chinook Salmon tends to be from mid August to mid September, while late August marks the end of good Chinook fishing.
The offshore fishing area a short distance from Tofino has provided the most consistent fishing action for Chinook Salmon and Halibuton in the west coast of Vancouver Island. The coastal water also provide fantastic opportunities for light tackle and fly-fishing for feisty Coho.
The Coho (Silver) Salmon, though smaller in size than the Chinook but they are the hardest fighting of all the Salmon. They arrive in the Ucluelet and Tofino water typically in mid-June and weigh 6 to 8 pounds and can grow to 2o lybs or more by August.
Beside the Chinook and Coho, other Salmon Family like Sockeye, Pink and Chum Salmon are also abundant at during the Salmon run season.
Fishing the bottom dwellers
Pacific Halibut is the favourite for many anglers fishing the west coast around Cloyoquot Sound. The smaller better eating Halibat tend to be in the 15 to 25 lb range, but larger catch can be up to 150lbs. There are many species of Rockfish, Snapper, lingcod, Sea Bass, Cabezon available while fishing the rocky shores around Ucluelet and Tofino.

Freshwater anglers have pristine rivers and streams all to themselves. The remote rivers and lakes of Clayoquot Sound are yours to discover Steelhead, Cutthroat, Rainbow trout action.
